Where to go?

Old Dusty Diary

Hello Diary
I decided to start writing you because scientists just made a truly odd discovery. Strange natural phenomena are one of my big interests (although I must admit I’m not an expert) so I thought it could be fun to keep note of this here.
Today I, like every other day, read the newspaper and found an article on this new, weird fog emerging from the north pole. Scientists apparently can’t explain it and no one can control it. This will be the main subject for you, my Diary, so don’t expect any personal stuff!

07/07/1980
Hello Diary,
There’s a new article in the newspaper. It says that the fog is spreading faster than they thought possible. They had to shut down airports far north and forbid sailors to go near the fog because of safety reasons. It disturbs magnetic fields and signals or something like that. I just hope that there’s more info tomorrow, and maybe something written without all this jargon.

Hello Diary,
Today there was no article about the fog in the newspaper but they excused it by saying they were working on a longer, indepth, article though they couldn’t finish it until there was more information. I guess the newspaper just wants to hold on to their customers.

07/23/1980
Hello Diary,
Still nothing from the newspapers but I did find a TV program that talked about the fog. It even had video clips of it. It looked ominous. The scariest part, though, was the picture of how much ground it already covers. Anyways, the show said stuff about the fog disrupting magnetic something in antennas and communication systems in unnatural ways and that’s why you aren’t allowed to go into it.
It also talked about four sailors who were out on a long trip of fishing when the fog emerged. They’re still reported missing. Hopefully they will find their way home when the fog clears.

Hello Diary,
Today's newspaper announced that we’ll get the fog article tomorrow. I can’t wait to see what it’ll say. The TV program today didn’t really say anything new, just that scientists were all over the fog trying to explain it and contain it. The containing part didn’t seem like they did very well.

07/25/1980
Hello Diary,
The entire newspaper was basically all about the fog. Very interesting. Initially we thought it had something to do with the Soviet Union but it seems to have started in the far northern Canada (of course this doesn’t entirely rule out the possibility of Soviet involvement), spreading very effectively towards the north pole but also in any other direction. The entirety of the arctic circle is now covered except for parts of Greenland. The research workers did some tests with a couple of radios and found that the fog redirects the signals in chaotic, nonsensical patterns. They even received a few unidentified signals but there were no coherent sentences.
What confused all the scientists the most was that the water the fog consists of is, by all their tests, just normal water. No sort of anything in the water that could cause the disruptions and no explanation to why it spread like it did, taking no regard to the weather. Actually it was more like the fog took over the weather. The ocean in the arctic circle is almost always ravaged by powerful storms but where the fog was no wind at all was found. Even the water was completely still, not even sea creatures were seen surfacing.
These are probably the most interesting parts of the article and since I’ve already written two pages I’ll stop.

Hello Diary,
The fog is slowly spreading and no one knows what to do about it. There aren't really any other updates.

10/02/1980
Hello again Diary,
It’s been a while. When there were no relevant updates on the fog I sort of forgot about you. I found you while cleaning out my dresser and I think you need an update on the fog. The entirety of Greenland and Iceland is completely covered by the fog along half of Canada, Scandinavia and Siberia. It’s been a hell of a few months with all sorts of climate crisis demonstrations and theories of things like aliens or armageddon. The religious say doomsday and the scientists can’t debunk it.
Nobody knows what to do.
I probably won’t write much in you from here on but I’ll make sure to update you once in a while.

10/21/1980
Hello Diary,
Recently there’s been a lot of stories circling around about people going into the fog. It’s a stupid endeavor if you ask me and most of those who venture too far in don’t return. But those who do tell the weirdest tales of strange creatures lurking in the periphery of their vision. Some of the adventurers even take cameras with them and it is said that they sometimes manage to take pictures of the beings. Scientists of course explain it as simple hoaxes and hallucinations but it has taken the world by shock nonetheless.

Hello Diary,
I just wanted to update you on the fog’s progress. It has taken all of Canada now and is slowly covering the USA. Well around half of Europe is engulfed in the fog and almost all of the Soviet Union as well. I’m afraid, Diary. Alone and afraid.

03/03/1981
Hello Diary,
This morning I woke up to the terrifying view of a thick fog on the horizon. I know that a lot of people migrate south but I don’t have a car nor would I have a place to live. I will go to the grocery store as soon as I’m done updating you to stock up on rations. I don’t know what else to do, Diary.

03/04/1981
Hello Diary,
The fog is at my doorstep. I live in the outskirts of a very small town, but it’s completely quiet now. Everyone saw their chance to flee this boring town. Maybe I should do the same? I have a bike with a rack and wagon that I could fill with rations and stuff. But what would it matter? I have no place to go. I would become an aimless vagabond. And the fog doesn’t seem to ever stop so it would catch up to me eventually.
I must stay. Tomorrow I will empty the stores of anything useful, there isn’t anyone else in town anyways. Luckily the electricity still works even though the TV can’t find a signal. They also stopped sending me newspapers.

03/13/1981
My house is stuffed with canned food, toilet paper and bottles of water. There was no one at the store so I just took it. I don’t really feel bad though, there’s no one left to use it. The worst part about this is the solitude.
I only have you, Diary.

03/24/1981
I don’t really go outside much and I feel it slowly tearing at me. I open a window once in a while to get some fresh air in and sometimes go to a store if there’s something I need, but I don’t want to spend more time in the Fog than necessary.
The best thing I have for entertaining myself is books. I’ve read a ton of books lately.

Hello Diary,
It’s kind of ironic when I read back into you and see how you started with being more of a notebook. I even said that I wouldn’t share anything personal. But the Fog changed everything, didn’t it Diary? It’s so quiet here. I mean it always was but now there’s no one here and the Fog dampens every small sound. You’re my only company now Diary.

04/20/1981
I’ve read every book I have now, even the boring ones. Yes, I read that much! Anyways, now I’m starting to think about exploring the Fog. It is eerie and all but I’ve lived here for well around one and a half months and nothing has happened. Except, of course, for the TV losing signal but I knew that that was gonna happen.
